and "The editor of this anthology addresses this literary omission by identifying seventeen Uruguayans deserving of recognition: Jorge Arbeleche, Nancy Bacelo, Washington Benavides, Mario Benedetti, Amanda Berenguer, Luis Bravo, Selva Casal, Rafael Courtoisie, Marosa Di Giorgio, Enrique Fierro, Alfredo Fressia, Saul Ibargoyen, Circe Maia, Jorge Meretta, Eduardo Milan, Alvaro Miranda, and Salvador Puig. Part of this is due to a lack of orientation a need to identify which poets of the hundreds currently writing are noteworthy.". Although some of Spanish America's most celebrated narrative writers of the past quarter century have garnered public, academic, and critical attention abroad, their poets have not. The final chapter is devoted to a brief biographical sketch of each poet and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources." "A number of these poets have had poems translated into other languages and included in national and international anthologies, and have received international recognition for their work, but they are still virtually unknown in English-speaking countries. Each poet is represented by an ample and varied selection of poems originally published in Spanish, here with English translations on facing pages. The introduction provides a brief background on Uruguay for readers unfamiliar with the country. "This volume is intended as an introduction of contemporary poetry by notable Uruguayan poets to the English-reading world, but also to readers of Spanish unfamiliar with them.

The first level of hindsight bias, memory distortion, involves misremembering an earlier opinion or judgment (“I said it would happen”) Vohs in their research identified 3 situations, where hindsight bias can influence our thought process: Memory Distortion Research also focuses on how we recall selective information related to the outcome of an event to convince ourselves what happened was supposed to happen” Neal J. Knowing we can predict what happens to us helps us feel safe in an unpredictable world. So WHY are we so quick to believe that we knew-it-all when we can’t even give an objective proof to support our claim?Ĭharles Holm, in his book, ‘The 25 Cognitive Biases - Uncovering the myth of Rational Thinking’ states, “Our dire need to make sense of this world around us makes us susceptible to this bias. So, be conscious & ask yourselves next time when this bias creeps into your mind, did you really know it or you felt it or did you even ‘felt it’?. “I knew this question will come in the exam, I should have studied it”, sighed Deepti as the exam got over. Let’s understand this from the examples below. The problem with Hindsight Bias is that a lot of times we actually didn’t know it all along, we only feel as though we did. Hindsight bias is also called the ‘knew-it-all-along’ effect or ‘creeping determinism’. And only after the event has occurred do people claim this was likely to happen. The term hindsight bias refers to the tendency of the people to claim that they knew the outcome of an event all along. The hindsight bias was first reported by the American psychologist Baruch Fischhoff in 1975. Let’s take a closer look at this knew-it-all(KIA) bias, also known as Hindsight Bias & find the answers to the questions ourselves. You all must be thinking why are we discussing this here? It doesn’t hurt anyone to say that? Is it bad? Is it Good? Isn’t it something to feel proud of that you predicted something & it came true? The above situations may differ each time, but we hear ourselves say it over and over again, “I knew it all along…didn’t I”. “I knew it he will be the murderer in the end, how smart can I be”, said my friend as soon as the killer was revealed in the movie. “I knew it all along India will win this match”, Mohit burst with joy, as Dhoni hits a six in the last ball. “I knew they will get married in 2020, I foretold Richa but she kept denying”, exclaimed my friend as she saw an Instagram post of Richa getting married in 2020. “I knew that the exams will be postponed due to the pandemic”, said my friend when her exams got postponed due to the Covid-19. I knew this was going to happen”, the thought popped up in my mind as I came back to the kitchen to see the milk boiled over. “I just left the kitchen to answer the doorbell. This dissertation proposes to investigate when and why hindsight bias fails to appear, and what it means for the psychological processes underlying the hindsight bias, and more broadly, the interpretation of older psychological research.Hindsight Bias: “I knew it all along, didn’t I?” However, we must interpret older results in the behavioral sciences with new perspective on the importance of sample size and statistical power (Ioannidis, 2005). Multiple failures to debias, with methods including informing participants about the bias (Fischhoff, 1977) and manipulating participant perspective (Wood, 1978) further grew the reputation for the strength of this bias. Researchers have found people fall victim to hindsight biases in a variety of domains, including general knowledge (Fischoff, 1977 Wood, 1978), medical decisions (Arkes, Wortmann, Saville, & Harkness, 1981), and political outcomes (Fischhoff & Beyth, 1975). Also known as the “knew-it-all-along effect” (Fischhoff, 1975) the hindsight bias refers to the inability for individuals to remember their previous state of knowledge after learning an outcome. The hindsight bias may not be as robust as previously believed. Most Macs from 2009 or 2010 will run High Sierra. Mac Pro models from late 2013, mid-2012, and mid-2010 will also run Mojave. MacBooks will need to be 2015 or newer, while iMac Pro computers will need to be 2017 or newer. Mojave will run on most Mac computers newer than 2012, with a few exceptions. Is Your Computer Compatible?īefore you decide to install either High Sierra or Mojave, you should make sure your computer is compatible. If you’re not concerned with integration between your iPhone and your Mac, then High Sierra could be the right choice. If you plan to run a lot of older programs that don’t have 64-bit versions, then High Sierra is probably the right choice. If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, then you may want to consider Mojave for the increased compatibility with iOS. If you’re a fan of dark mode, then you may well want to upgrade to Mojave. The refinements to APFS translate into a speedier computer and help you free up space. If you have a fusion drive, then Mojave is almost certainly the better bet for you. Mojave has some distinct advantages over High Sierra, but which one is really better? Choosing between macOS Mojave vs High Sierra depends on what you want to do with your Mac. It also makes screenshots work similar to iOS. Mojave also introduced Gallery View to Finder. You can now make changes to documents without even opening them. It combines Quick Look and the Markup tools that first appeared back in 2014. Instead, you can click on the relevant stack to see a list of files of that type. You’ll no longer need to hunt for a particular document. Mojave groups files, folders, and photos you drag onto your desktop. MacOS Sierra had introduced Share Desktops, while Mojave introduces Desktop Stacks. These features could help you stay a little more organized. Other changes between High Sierra and macOS Mojave have to do with your desktop and the Finder. Many users are familiar with dark mode from mobile apps, so they’ll be happy to see this option available. It’s particularly helpful for anyone who does a lot of work late at night or in a darkened room. Many users like dark mode because it reduces eye strain. Dark Mode now applies to every feature of every app, across the system. Even some of Apple’s own software defies dark mode and remains bright on the screen. In High Sierra, the best you can get is a “dark” menu bar. If you’re using Sierra or High Sierra, you can get more info about how to use Night Shift. Sierra called it “Night Shift.” High Sierra also included a Dark Mode, but users were less than impressed. A True Dark Mode With Mojaveĭark Mode was first introduced in macOS El Capitan. If you’re using an older version of the OS, these apps won’t be available to you. Some iOS apps, like News, made their way to macOS with Mojave. Mojave introduced a feature that allows you to choose your iPhone as a method of “content capture” while you’re working on your Mac. High Sierra, for example, allows your Messages history to be kept in sync across devices. Mojave continued the trend toward “iPadification.” More iOS apps made their way to macOS, as well as features. If you want to keep running 32-bit apps without issue, though, High Sierra is your best bet. Still, Mojave will run 32-bit apps, unlike Catalina. Functionality may be reduced or you may notice the app crashes a lot. So, while a 32-bit app will still run on Mojave, it might act a bit strange. With Mojave, Apple said they were no longer supporting 32-bit apps without compromise. True APFS functionality for fusion drives didn’t arrive until Mojave rolled out, though.Īnother key difference between the two versions is support for 32-bit apps. It also makes the process of copying files faster, among other things. Apple had introduced it to mobile devices since it can help save space. It changes the way your computer organizes data. It also refines the Apple File System, or APFS, that Apple introduced with High Sierra.ĪPFS replaces the old Hierarchical File System (HFS+). It refines Dark Mode, taking it further than High Sierra did. Like other updates to OS X, Mojave builds on what its predecessors have done. The two have a lot in common, unlike Mojave and the more recent Catalina. When it comes to macOS versions, Mojave and High Sierra are very comparable. So, which is better? This guide will help you compare the two. High Sierra is the version before that, which builds on Sierra. Mojave is the second-most recent version of OS X, and the last one to have support for 32-bit apps. Many people wonder about High Sierra vs Mojave. Most machines are compatible with several versions, so you can choose. Of course, the question for almost any Mac user is which version of OS X is best. Some were revolutionary, while others have stayed the course. Since then, there have been 15 different versions of OS X. It’s been 20 years since macOS X first arrived. The lower the temperature in your home, the less water your tree will consume and the better it will fare. Heat and high indoor temperatures are the enemy of your tree, causing it to dry and wither faster. Don’t Leave Your Tree High and Dryĭisplay your Christmas tree away from all heat sources, including heating and air vents, fireplaces, portable heaters, and direct sunlight. A good tree stand is likewise a pal to your pine, ensuring it has access to the supply of water and vertical support it needs to last you safely through the holiday season. Cool water is your tree’s best friend, and will keep it fragrant. (This helps open up the pores in the bark in the event they’ve become clogged by sap.) Water your tree with cold water, abstaining from miracle chemicals touted to extend the life of your tree. To ensure your tree can source the water it needs, be sure to cut the base of the tree an inch above the original cut just before placing it in the stand. How do I keep my Christmas tree from drying out? With a steady supply of water, which your tree will consume in mass quantities, drinking a gallon or more in the initial 24 hours after it is cut, and more than a quart daily. The key to a long lasting Christmas tree is moisture, which trees begin to lose as soon as they are cut. Look for trees that shed very few needles when you run the branches lightly though your fingers, or that when shaken shed very few green needles. Buy your tree fresh from the farm, or if you must shop retail, choose trees stored in a cool, shaded area, and not stacked so tightly branches are damaged. Buy Smartįor looks that last, shop smart. You know it won’t last forever, but after all that hard work, how can you preserve your precious Christmas pine? For holiday looks that last, don’t neglect these tenets of real Christmas tree care…. You shopped for hours, pestering the retail clerk to unleash the branches of at least a dozen trees, strapped your fabulous fir to the car, hauled it into your home, and precariously balanced it to perfection, artfully adorning it with family and friends. Kesser is engaged in research to better understand hearing mechanisms in children with aural atresia. Families from around the world send Kesser their child's imaging results and hearing tests to find out whether their child qualifies for the procedure. UVA is a global referral center for surgical repair of the ear canal. The FDA has not approved this surgical procedure for children under 5 years old. The device also can be surgically implanted on the skull and attached by a post or magnet to a sound processor outside of the head. Children under 5 years old would wear a device attached to a strap or headband, with the oscillator on the outside of the body. Non-Surgical Options Availableįor children who are not candidates for the surgery, UVA Health offers other options, including bone-conducting hearing devices. “I generally do not recommend atresia repair, either in children with unilateral or bilateral atresia, until they are old enough to cooperate with the hearing testing and postoperative care that is absolutely necessary to ensure an excellent result,” Kesser says. The timing of atresia repair depends on many factors, including a patient’s age and maturity, and the type of outer ear reconstruction they will undergo. Kesser and colleagues have conducted research showing that children scoring seven or higher on the scale have an 80 to 90% chance of achieving normal or near-normal hearing after the procedure. Jahrsdoerfer developed a 10-point grading scale for evaluating a child’s ear anatomy and determining their candidacy for aural atresia repair surgery. But not all children with aural atresia are candidates for the procedure. Kesser’s mentor, Robert Jahrsdoerfer, MD, pioneered this groundbreaking procedure in the late 1970s. “In carefully selected patients, the chances of achieving normal or near-normal hearing with surgery approach 90%.” Success Depends on Right Candidate & Timing “The finished result is a healthy, skin-lined ear canal with a tympanic membrane and ossicles that vibrate freely to allow the efficient conduction of sound energy to the inner ear,” Kesser says. Finally, an opening, or meatus, aligned with the new canal, is created in the reconstructed auricle. Next, the surgeon constructs an eardrum, or tympanic membrane, and lines the new bony ear canal with a thin skin graft, usually harvested from the patient’s upper arm or thigh. Facial nerve monitoring is critical throughout this process to prevent facial paralysis. UVA Health also offers cosmetic reconstruction of microtia, often coordinating the procedure with aural atresia repair.Īural atresia repair starts with creating an ear canal by drilling a channel into the skull to the middle ear, where the small ear bones (ossicles) are located. In most patients, the condition is seen in combination with microtia, a deformity resulting in a small, undeveloped outer ear. Restoring HearingĪural atresia affects about one in 10,000 to 20,000 children (primarily male), with about 70% of these cases involving only one ear – most commonly the right ear. It’s one of the few medical centers in the United States with a comprehensive program offering hearing evaluation, analysis of middle ear anatomy, outer ear reconstruction, a comprehensive discussion of hearing habilitation options for these children and their families, and revision procedures as needed. Parents from all over the world bring their children to UVA Health for the surgery, which opens the ear canal and restores the ear’s natural sound-conducting mechanisms. UVA is internationally recognized for expertise in congenital aural atresia repair, also known as canalplasty. “Intervention may help a child meet his or her full potential.” “These children are born with a moderate to severe hearing loss, and after surgery, many times I can bring their hearing into the normal range,” says neurotologist Bradley Kesser, MD, a professor in UVA’s Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. For children born with aural atresia – the lack of a fully developed ear canal and middle ear in one or both ears – UVA’s aural atresia repair program offers hope for a normal life. Thankfully, Sniper Elite V2‘s gameplay surpasses its muddy visuals and pushes them to the wayside because looks don’t matter so much when you can literally and figuratively spend the entire game crushing Nazi balls. After all, when you’re retooling an already murky shooter from 2012, there’s only so much you can do to improve things. Rebellion's Sniper Elite series has proven popular with online spectators, not least because its killcam is capable of generating slow motion footage of chaps being shot in the testicles.Sniper Elite V2 Remastered is pretty unimpressive to look at. uk caught up with Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion and chairman of The Independent Games Association, to talk YouTube, game design and nut shots. uk: Tell us about Rebellion's approach to game streaming and broadcasting. JK: We embraced the idea of people playing our games, recording the footage and getting that info out there. We had a very modest budget for that project and it was tongue-in-cheek. We had a lot of very successful multiplayer sessions recorded and played by famous Youtube and Twitch commentators, and these things have had upwards of a million views which is brilliant for us. Somebody engaging with a video of our game for 15 minutes is incredibly powerful and quite fun to watch too. They probably don't want too much chat from the game over their voiceovers because they're chatting to each other. Did they do the things you expected, when you expected? Or did they do something different? What's interesting is looking at the different play styles, which allows us to examine how people play our games for real as well which is always interesting from a gameplay perspective. In the very first Sniper Elite the killcam was an interesting gameplay feature because it was designed to emphasise the long-distance shooting in the game. We were trying to innovate gameplay We had the bullet travel camera and then an impact. In Sniper Elite V2 we said let's go into even more detail. For many people it was quite shocking detail - quite grotesque. We've gone even further in Sniper Elite 3. It's quite uncomfortable to see the killcam but that's deliberate. We are not trying to go for the gore factor. We are trying to emphasise the lethality of a single sniper bullet and trying to create that atmosphere of utter terror that snipers create on the battlefield. We're trying to make adults think about what a sniper does and what it means to be a sniper. It sounds a bit arty but the game is a slower paced game and a little less like a fairground ride than something like Call of Duty. We're not trying to emulate the machine gun from the hip charging into the enemy and blasting everywhere. We're trying to push people into a different mindset and a place filled with tension and death.ĭo you find there's ever a conflict between making something that's enjoyable to watch and making something that's enjoyable to play? I think games are one of the few mediums where you can actually do that. If you think about television and movies, wonderful though they are, there is very little interaction. You watch a movie and it's the same movie for everybody. They may interpret it differently or be watching it in different languages but basically it's the same data stream from beginning to end. With a game you can watch the same game being played by two different people and it's a different thing. Somebody may be playing Sniper Elite the way we intended it to be played, which is slowly and steadily, creeping around and taking their time to make their shots. Other people may be charging in there - because they don't really understand what we're trying to do - and getting the shit kicked out of them regularly and losing a lot.īoth are equally valid ways of playing a game I suppose. One is going to be more successful than the other but both are equally valid. It's quite fun to watch people doing things that you've created in different ways than you expected. Has being aware of YouTube and Twitch impacted how you make games? We don't specifically design the game with social media or YouTubers in mind. We build the best game we can in the circumstances, in the way we feel it ought to be played. However, multiplayer components are interesting.
